Newcastle Anglican stands with the Jewish community

Dear Newcastle Anglican community,

Newcastle Anglican stands with the Jewish community of Bondi, and wider Australia, in condemnation of the vile and evil acts of terrorism that unfolded on our peaceful shores.

Thousands of Sydneysiders spent a beautiful afternoon celebrating the season in whichever way suited them. Families and friends were enjoying precious time together. We live in a country where we anticipate that we can go about that freely and safely.

The introduction of violence by people who intended to cause great harm has no place in our community.

Our nation has been shaken. Our hearts are a little darkened. However, we cannot bow to those who undermine our values.

We live in a multi-faith, multicultural society which celebrates differences and holds it with the greatest respect. It is who we are. It is part of the contemporary Australian ideal.

Our Australian character stood up in the face of this horror last night. There are countless stories of incredible heroism. There will be countless more in the days to come.

Hanukkah and Christmas are about joy and peace.

Let us hold that close to us.

Let us pursue peace in the face of evil.

Let us come together to restore a brave space where people with different views can safely go about their daily lives.

Please look after yourself and those around you today, and in the coming days.

Grace and peace,

Bishop Peter
